Roger Bannister became the first person ever to run a mile in under four minutes, a barrier that had apparently defeated every runner who'd attempted it before him, and then went on to have an entirely separate, serious career as a neurologist, which I find almost more impressive than the record itself. It would have been perfectly understandable, and rather tempting, for him to spend the rest of his life simply being the man who broke the four-minute mile. He didn't. He built a whole second, demanding profession afterward, treating actual patients rather than resting on one extraordinary afternoon on a track in Oxford. I have, at various points in my own comparatively unstrenuous life, been tempted to let one modest accomplishment carry rather more weight than it deserved, and Bannister's refusal to do that with something genuinely historic strikes me as the more instructive part of his story, even if it is the part that gets mentioned considerably less often.
