Nora Roberts is one of the best-selling novelists in history, known for a genuinely prolific output across romance and suspense fiction, and 'prolific' is a word I respect maybe more than any other, given my own track record of starting things and quietly letting them die somewhere around commit number twelve. Shipping consistently, at volume, for an entire career, while apparently maintaining enough quality that millions of readers keep coming back for more, is basically the software equivalent of a founder who ships a new solid product every quarter without ever burning out or losing the thread. My comedy career runs on a similar unglamorous math, actually — you don't get good jokes without writing a lot of bad ones first and just continuing to show up anyway. I imagine writing that much fiction, that consistently, over that long a career, works the same way: less about waiting for lightning to strike and more about treating the work itself as the discipline, showing up whether or not you feel inspired that specific day. That's the unsexy part of prolific output that nobody puts on the book jacket.
