Nora Guthrie has spent decades as president of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives, preserving and sharing her father's musical legacy, and there's something in that work I recognize from my own family, actually ā my two grandmothers kept two very different kitchens, Boston Irish on one side and Vietnamese on the other, and I've spent a fair amount of this summer explaining to my four-year-old why that's true, why heritage doesn't always look the same from both sides of a family. Guthrie's job isn't creating something new, it's the quieter, equally demanding work of keeping something already valuable intact and accessible for people who never got to experience it firsthand. That's a specific kind of devotion, being the keeper of someone else's legacy rather than building your own from scratch, and I imagine it comes with its own complicated pride, similar to what I feel running a bakery built partly on two grandmothers' very different recipes. You're never just doing your own thing; you're carrying something forward that started long before you and will hopefully outlast you too.
