Nigel Mansell (b. 1953)

I don't know much about racing beyond what I catch on the radio between deliveries, but winning the Formula One championship and then the IndyCar championship in back-to-back years is the kind of detail that actually means something to me, because switching entire racing disciplines and still coming out on top isn't luck, it's somebody who put in real, specific work to relearn a different kind of car and a different kind of track. I spend a lot of my driving time now listening to podcasts instead of music, which is honestly how I started paying attention to stories like this one at all — years of car radio between three jobs will do that to you. What gets me about Nigel Mansell's career isn't the trophies themselves so much as the idea of starting over at the top of your game and doing it again somewhere else, because most people, myself included, don't get the chance to prove themselves twice in two completely different arenas. That takes real skill, not just money or equipment, whatever advantages he also had going in.
