Nigel Hawthorne (1929-2001)

I don't get out to many pictures these days, but I remember The Madness of King George being the kind of serious, dignified film they don't seem to make as often anymore, and Nigel Hawthorne's performance in it earned him an Oscar nomination for good reason — that's the sort of acting that takes real patience, showing a man's mind slowly coming undone without ever tipping into anything cheap or showy. I've watched a few former students go on to do fine, careful work in whatever field they chose, and there's a similar quality in it: not flashy, just deeply, deeply good at the craft. Being "acclaimed" the way he was means his fellow actors respected him as much as any audience did, which in my experience is usually the more honest measure of somebody's real worth. I like an actor who trusts a quiet scene to hold its own weight instead of reaching for something louder. There's a lesson in that for anybody, honestly — sometimes the strongest performance is the one that doesn't ask you to notice it working.
