Nigel Kennedy (b. 1956)

Nigel Kennedy is basically the guy who looked at classical music's stuffy dress code and said "nah," and made it work — turning violin performances into something with actual electricity, the kind of energy that gets new audiences into a genre most people associate with falling asleep in a nice chair. I do standup on weekends, so I have a professional appreciation for anyone who makes a supposedly inaccessible art form suddenly feel like it's for you specifically, sitting in the cheap seats, not just for people who grew up with season tickets. My parents tried very hard to get me into classical music as a kid and mostly failed until I got older and realized the problem was never the music, it was the presentation — which is exactly the gap Kennedy seems to have closed for a lot of people. Making something rigorous and technically demanding also feel fun and immediate, without dumbing it down, is a genuinely hard bit to land, on a violin or on a stage, and I respect anybody who pulls it off for real.
