Louis Braille (1809-1852)

Louis Braille lost his sight as a young boy, and instead of that being the end of what anybody expected from him, he grew up and invented an entire system of raised dots that let blind folks read and write for themselves, a gift that's still helping people all over the world find their way into books nearly two hundred years later. I taught third grade for thirty-eight years in a little two-room schoolhouse, and I had more than one child come through my door who the world had already halfway written off before they ever sat down at a desk — a bad hip, a stutter, a family that didn't have two nickels to rub together. The good ones, the ones like Braille, don't let somebody else's low expectations become their own. He didn't wait around for the world to make reading easier for him. He built the tool himself, out of his own darkness, and handed it to everybody who came after. That's the kind of quiet, stubborn faith I try to plant in every child I ever taught: don't wait on permission to fix what's broken. Fix it yourself if you have to.
