Louis Armstrong (1901-1971)

Louis Armstrong didn't just play the trumpet well, he changed what trumpet playing and singing were even allowed to sound like, and that's the kind of innovation I try to get my players to understand: greatness usually looks less like following the form perfectly and more like rewriting what the form even is. His innovations rippled through basically all of twentieth-century music, jazz obviously, but way beyond that too, the same way one athlete who does something nobody's tried before can change how an entire sport gets played for generations after them. I coach basketball, not music, but the pattern's the same — somebody has to go first, has to trust their own instrument, literal or otherwise, before anybody else believes it's possible. I tell my kids all the time: the ones who get remembered aren't always the most technically perfect, they're the ones brave enough to sound like nobody else. Armstrong sounded like nobody else. That's the whole ballgame right there.
