June Allyson's wholesome charm carried her through a long run of MGM films in the 1940s and '50s, and I approach an actress of that particular era with genuine curiosity rather than my usual classical-music preferences, since I have, admittedly, developed a late-in-life appreciation for the arts beyond opera thanks to my son's career as a working artist. There is a discipline to sustaining an appealing, consistent screen persona across many films and years that I suspect is underestimated by people who assume it requires less craft than more dramatic performances — repetition done well is its own kind of rigor, not unlike running the same careful experiment many times to confirm a result holds. Allyson maintained that consistency across a career long enough to matter, in an industry not known for rewarding longevity, particularly for women. I find, the older I get, that I am less interested in the single dramatic breakthrough and more interested in exactly this kind of sustained, dependable excellence over many years.
