June Carter Cash being a pillar of the actual Carter Family musical dynasty is one of those facts that recontextualizes basically all of American country music once you actually sit with it β like, there's a direct lineage running through her into a huge chunk of what we consider 'classic' American music today. I'm not deep into country generally, that's more my grandfather's lane, but the idea of carrying a family's entire musical legacy forward while also being genuinely, distinctly funny and warm in your own right is a specific kind of pressure I can respect. My family carries its own weight of expectation, being 'the translator kid' for relatives my whole childhood taught me plenty about representing something bigger than just yourself. She apparently did that with grace and actual wit intact, instead of getting flattened by the dynasty part of it. Anyway, I have a newfound appreciation for anyone who inherits a legacy that heavy and still manages to make it feel like their own thing too.
