Gloria Swanson was one of the biggest, most glamorous stars of the silent era, and then decades later she came back and became iconic all over again in Sunset Boulevard, playing a version of a faded star that some folks say hit a little close to home for her. That's a strange kind of career, being famous twice, for two different reasons, a whole generation apart — I've met drivers out here who had two completely different lives before they ever got behind a wheel, so I don't find that as unusual as some might. What gets me is she apparently leaned into that second act instead of running from it, made the fading part of the story instead of hiding it. I hold two feelings about that kind of reinvention: admiration for the courage it takes, and a little sadness that an industry made her earn her relevance twice over just to stay visible.
