Gloria Estefan (b. 1957)

Gloria Estefan helped bring Latin pop to a genuinely global mainstream audience and has sold over one hundred million records in the process, a figure precise enough that I feel obligated, as a scientist by training, to note how rarely such round numbers hold up to scrutiny — and yet in her case the documentation is thorough and the achievement entirely real. What interests me more than the sales figures, frankly, is the cultural work involved: opening a door in an industry that had not previously made much room for an artist singing in her own idiom, on her own terms, and having millions of listeners follow her through it anyway. I think often, from my own career in physics, about the difference between people who open doors and people who simply walk through ones already open. Estefan built the door herself. That is a considerably harder feat of engineering than any of us in the sciences are ever asked to manage, and I say that with genuine, unqualified admiration.
