Faith Ringgold made her name with narrative quilts and children's books exploring African American history and identity, and there's something about the word 'narrative' attached to a quilt that's stuck with me since I first read it — stitching an actual story into fabric, piece by piece, the same patient way I've built a whole podcast out of small stories collected one truck stop at a time. I've driven through more towns tied up in that history than I could list, places that mattered enormously to somebody's grandparents and get passed right by now without a second look from most drivers. Ringgold apparently spent a career making sure that history didn't get passed by the same way, using an art form nobody expected to carry that kind of weight, and doing it well enough to become acclaimed for it. I've got contradictory feelings about how much of this country's real history actually gets told versus quietly paved over, and stories like hers, patient and specific and stitched together one piece at a time, feel like a genuine counterweight to that.
