I'll be straight with you, R&B isn't a lane I know well, my whole music education runs more toward Sinatra and classic rock than anything with soulful, modern vocals in it, and I don't pretend otherwise. But Faith Evans is a Grammy-winning R&B singer with a decades-long recording career built specifically on soulful vocals, and a career that sustains that long in any music genre means the talent underneath it was never in question, no matter how unfamiliar the sound is to somebody my age. I've had to admit, more than once writing these pieces, that my own tastes narrowed a long time ago and that narrowing isn't the same thing as an actual judgment on the quality of somebody else's work. Decades in a recording career is decades of staying relevant enough that people kept buying records and coming to shows, through however many shifts the music industry went through in the meantime. I don't need to personally love a sound to recognize when somebody's built a genuinely lasting career on real skill, and that's exactly what's in front of me here.
