I'll admit country's not usually where I land, I'm more of a classic rock and Sinatra guy myself, but Faith Hill's the kind of artist even someone outside her genre has to respect — multi-platinum, known for hits like 'Breathe,' one of the best-selling artists in country music history, period. Donna's had that music on plenty of Sunday mornings over the years while I was cooking badly and trying to figure out the stove without her supervising, and I've come around on a few of the songs whether I meant to or not. Being one of the best-selling in an entire genre isn't a fluke that happens over one good album; that takes years of consistent output that actually connects with people, album after album, in a business that chews up and spits out a lot of talent that never builds that kind of staying power. I still wouldn't put her ahead of Sinatra on my own turntable, that's just where my ear lands after sixty-eight years, but I know real, sustained success in a music business when I hear the numbers, whatever the genre.
