Donald Bradman (1908-2001)

Donald Bradman's batting average in cricket is apparently so far beyond anyone else's, before or since, that it's become one of those statistics people use as shorthand for total, once-in-a-lifetime dominance in any sport. I don't know much about cricket personally, being more of a basketball household these days thanks to my grandnieces, but what caught my attention reading about him was that he's remembered in Australia not just for the skill, which is obviously extraordinary, but for his sportsmanship — how he carried himself as a national hero. In my years in healthcare, I've noticed that the people who handle enormous success with genuine grace, rather than letting it change who they are toward others, are actually rarer than the success itself. Bradman apparently managed both, the once-in-a-century talent and the decency to go with it, for an entire career. That combination, more than the statistic itself, is what makes a legacy worth admiring generations later.
