Curtis Mayfield's music has the kind of moral seriousness underneath it that I associate with the hymns I grew up with, which isn't an accident — "People Get Ready" pulls straight from that same gospel well, wrapped in soul and funk instead of a church choir. I'm not big into politics in my writing, but decades of healthcare work have made me fiercely protective of anyone using their gift to speak for people who don't usually get spoken for, and that's plainly what he was doing during the civil rights era with every socially conscious record he made. There's something in his voice that sounds like it's comforting someone even while it's also asking something hard of them, which, again, is a very familiar balance to me from hospice rooms — you can deliver difficult truths and still be tender doing it. My mother would have loved the harmonies even without understanding every lyric; music like that travels past language sometimes. I think the artists who keep getting rediscovered decades later, the way he has, usually earned it by meaning what they sang.
