Clara Schumann (1819-1896)

Clara Schumann was a celebrated pianist and composer of the Romantic era who maintained one of the most successful concert careers of her time, a fact that deserves rather more emphasis than it typically receives, given how much of the historical record treats her primarily in relation to her more famous husband. I find this pattern professionally familiar, having spent a career in a field, physics, where a woman's contributions have historically been filtered through whichever man happened to be standing nearest her. Schumann's concert career was substantial and entirely her own achievement, built through genuine virtuosity and years of sustained public performance, not merely borrowed prestige. I am, I'll admit, a stickler about getting this kind of credit correctly attributed — evidence should speak for itself, and the evidence here is that she was one of the most accomplished performing musicians of her era on her own merits. It is worth insisting on that plainly, rather than letting the easier, more familiar version of the story stand uncorrected.
