Clara Barton (1821-1912)

Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross after years of nursing soldiers and organizing disaster relief with basically no institutional backup behind her at first, just her own two hands and whoever she could convince to help. I've worked enough jobs where nobody handed me the resources I needed and I just figured out how to make it work anyway, so I respect that part of her story more than the famous name part. Founding something that big out of that kind of unglamorous, exhausting, hands-on work — actually being there with soldiers, actually organizing supplies in real disasters, not just fundraising from a distance — that's a different level of commitment than most people who get remembered in history books ever put in. It's the kind of work that doesn't pay well or get noticed while you're doing it, same as a lot of jobs I've held. She built something that outlasted her by well over a century because she did the real work first and let the institution follow, not the other way around. That order matters more than people give it credit for.
