Clara Bow (1905-1965)

Clara Bow was the original "It Girl," one of the most popular actresses of the entire 1920s, a kind of fame that's hard to imagine now given how different the whole industry was back then, cameras and all. Ay, I think about how much pressure that must have been on someone so young, carrying a whole era's idea of glamour on her shoulders with none of the support systems we'd expect for a young star today — no therapist on call, no real understanding yet of what that kind of public attention does to a person. In my years as a hospice nurse I've cared for people from every walk of life, and fame, I've learned, doesn't protect anybody from the ordinary hard parts of being human — loneliness, exhaustion, wanting rest. Bow gave audiences something joyful during a genuinely difficult era in this country's history, and that's worth remembering with real gratitude, even without knowing everything else that was happening underneath the bright lights for her personally. Sometimes bringing people joy is its own quiet form of caregiving too.
