Alfonso X of Castile (1221-1284)

Filed under the name Alfonso · March 22, 2026

Alfonso X of Castile ruled Spain in the 1200s and got the nickname 'the Wise,' which, if we're being honest, is a nickname that would not survive contact with a modern comments section — somebody would immediately find the one thing he got wrong and make that his whole personality online forever. But by actual historical standards the guy earned it: he sponsored major advances in law, astronomy, and literature during his reign, basically funding an entire medieval R&D department out of the royal treasury. That's very 'benevolent tech founder' energy, honestly, if the founder also had to worry about actual wars instead of quarterly earnings calls. My own parents came from Bangalore with basically nothing and built something out of nothing too, on a wildly different scale obviously, but I have a soft spot for anyone who used whatever power or resources they had to make actual knowledge grow instead of just hoarding it. Alfonso the Wise: 800 years later, still out here winning the historical-nickname lottery.
