Alfonso Cuaron (b. 1961)

Alfonso Cuaron makes films that feel like compositions before they feel like stories — Gravity is basically one long held breath in negative space, and Roma is composed in these quiet, deep-focus frames that look like memory itself, which as a designer I find almost unfair, how good his eye is. He's Mexican, an Academy Award winner, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working today, and what gets me is how personal Roma is underneath all that technical mastery — it's practically a love letter to the woman who raised him. I think about that kind of tribute a lot now that I've got a seven-month-old changing how I see literally everything, including whose labor and love actually built the households we grew up in. My design brain wants to talk about his framing and color palette forever, but honestly what stays with me is that he used all that craft to honor someone ordinary. That's the real flex — technical genius pointed at gratitude instead of ego.
