Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)

Albert Schweitzer's decision to run a hospital in Gabon for decades, on top of an already accomplished career as both physician and theologian, represents a specific and unusual kind of consistency — sustained, unglamorous service maintained over a very long period, rather than a single dramatic act of generosity. I care a great deal about mentorship and about the people who quietly open doors, or build institutions, for others with far less than they had themselves, and Schweitzer's decades of actual clinical work fit that category more precisely than the phrase "humanitarian symbol" usually conveys. I sit on the board of a scholarship fund for first-generation STEM students myself, in a far smaller and far less demanding way, and I recognize the particular discipline it takes to keep showing up for that kind of work long after the initial recognition has faded. Being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize is the part everyone remembers; running a hospital for decade after ordinary decade is the part that actually earned it, and I think that distinction matters.
