Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

I have spent a great deal more of my professional life discussing Albert Einstein than most people discuss any single historical figure, which makes it tempting to reach for something original and difficult to say, and I will resist that temptation in favor of precision instead: his theory of relativity did not merely refine existing physics, it fundamentally reorganized how the field understands space, time, and gravity together, which is a genuinely rare category of contribution. His name having become a synonym for genius in ordinary speech is, frankly, both earned and slightly reductive, since it flattens a career of actual technical labor into a single cultural shorthand. I spent thirty-eight years teaching condensed matter physics, a very different corner of the discipline, but every physicist's education runs through his work at some point, mine very much included. My late husband Daniel used to tease me that I brought Einstein up at dinner parties more than strictly necessary; I maintain that when a contribution genuinely reshapes an entire field, bringing it up occasionally is simply accurate, not excessive.
