Albert Pujols (b. 1980)

Albert Pujols being a likely future Hall of Famer is honestly the less interesting half of his story to me — his foundation supporting people with Down syndrome and communities back in the Dominican Republic is the part that actually sticks with me, probably because I grew up watching my own family send whatever they could spare back to people who needed it more, just at a much, much smaller scale than a professional athlete's foundation obviously operates at. There's something about immigrant and first-generation success stories where the money starts flowing backward toward home the second there's any to spare, and it happens so consistently across totally different countries and totally different fields that I don't think it's a coincidence, I think it's just what gratitude looks like when it has actual resources behind it. Building that kind of sustained charitable structure, on top of maintaining an elite baseball career for that many years, means the commitment was real and ongoing, not just a nice line in a press release somewhere.
