Walter Payton earned the nickname "Sweetness" on the field, but from what I understand it's his charitable work that people bring up in the same breath as the record-setting career, which is the kind of balance you don't see often enough in professional sports. Running backs take a beating nobody else on the field takes, game after game, season after season, and Payton apparently did that at a Hall of Fame level for the Bears while also building a reputation for genuinely caring about people off the field, not just cashing checks and moving on. I respect athletes who don't let the fame turn them into somebody who forgets where regular people are standing, same as I respect anybody who makes it big and doesn't forget the guys still on the mill floor. Being remembered equally for the record-setting and the charity says something real about a man's character outlasting his statistics, which is a rarer combination in professional sports than the highlight reels usually let on.
