Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)

Sir Walter Scott essentially helped invent an entire literary form with the historical novel, which is the kind of foundational contribution that's easy to take for granted now, the same way nobody thinks twice about sourdough starters even though somebody, at some point, had to be the first person to figure out how that actually works reliably. Writing Ivanhoe and helping establish a whole new way of blending real history with invented story means Scott wasn't just good at the craft that already existed, he was building the shape of a genre other writers would use for the next two centuries. I find myself thinking in terms of what people build and nearly lose, or what people build entirely from nothing, and inventing a literary form that durable definitely counts as building something lasting from scratch. That kind of foundational, generous contribution — creating a form other people get to use freely afterward — is the kind of legacy I find genuinely moving, even from this much historical distance.
