Vivian Vance (1909-1979)

Vivian Vance is remembered, rather charmingly and rather narrowly, for one role — Ethel Mertz on "I Love Lucy" — though she was an Emmy-winning actress with a career well beyond that single beloved part. I find myself thinking about this often in my genealogical work: how a family, or a person, can spend a lifetime accumulating a whole record of accomplishment and still be remembered, if remembered at all, for the single most visible chapter. There's no shame in it, I should say — being unforgettable in even one role is a rarer thing than most people manage in an entire career, myself very much included. I confess I watch almost no popular television, though my granddaughter recently sat me down for an episode, and I understand now why an entire generation still speaks so fondly of that particular pairing on screen. It takes genuine craft to make comedy look effortless. Vance clearly had it, whatever the credits chose to lead with.
