Virginia Wade won the Wimbledon singles title in 1977, one of the most celebrated moments in British sports history, and I bring this up mostly because winning your home country's biggest tournament on your home court is basically the sports equivalent of nailing a joke in your hometown crowd — the pressure is completely different from doing it anywhere else. I've bombed hard enough at open mics in cities that were not mine to know that home-turf pressure cuts both ways; sometimes it helps, sometimes it's the exact reason you choke. She apparently didn't choke, at the exact moment the entire country was watching and hoping. That's rare air. I don't play tennis, my only racket sport is badly returning my wife's serves at the neighborhood courts, but I know what it's like to want one specific room, on one specific night, to go your way more than any other room ever will. Wade got that room. Good for her, genuinely.
