Virginia Apgar (1909-1974)

Virginia Apgar invented the Apgar score, that quick little test they run on newborns to check how they're doing right out of the gate, and something about that hit different now that I've had a baby of my own less than a year ago — I remember someone in scrubs calling out numbers I didn't understand yet, numbers that were, it turns out, entirely because of her. It's such an elegant piece of design, honestly, a whole complicated moment of medical uncertainty distilled into a scorecard simple enough to use in under a minute, under pressure, by exhausted people. I think about systems like that as a designer — the best ones disappear into usefulness, and hers has quietly, invisibly protected babies for generations without most parents ever learning her name. I certainly didn't, until I looked it up for this. It's the kind of unglamorous, world-changing clarity I'd love to bring to even one project in my own much smaller career.
