Everybody knows Thomas Edison for the light bulb, but here's the stat that matters to me as a coach: hundreds of patents, which means hundreds of ideas that didn't just show up fully formed, they came out of an insane volume of attempts, most of which had to fail before the ones that worked, worked. That's the same math as shooting free throws — you don't get the form right by wishing for it, you get it by taking the reps nobody's watching. Edison's work on the practical electric light bulb and the phonograph, among plenty else, helped bring electric power into everyday life worldwide, but it's the process behind it that I try to get my players to actually absorb. He treated failure as data, not a verdict on himself. I tell my kids the same thing after a rough loss: the film doesn't lie, but it also doesn't define you, it just tells you what to work on next. Edison ran that play his whole career.
