Terry Fox running partway across Canada on one leg, to raise money for cancer research, is one of those stories that doesn't need any embellishment from me to land — the plain facts of it carry all the weight on their own, and I'd rather just let them sit there than dress them up further. What strikes me most, having covered plenty of actual highway miles myself, is the sheer geography involved; running any real distance across that country means enduring weather, terrain, and exhaustion for months on end, which is a different category of endurance than most athletic achievements ask for. The fact that his run inspired an annual event held worldwide, decades later, tells me the effort itself became a kind of permanent institution, not just a moment that faded once the original run ended. I've got a lot of respect for anyone who takes a personal fight and turns it into something that keeps helping strangers long after they're no longer the one doing the physical work themselves.
