Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is known for her work supporting causes including sight loss prevention and women's rights around the world, and that particular combination — vision and women's welfare together — feels connected in a way that maybe isn't obvious at first. In my hospice work, I've sat with plenty of patients whose eyesight failed long before anything else did, and I've watched how much independence and dignity a person loses the moment they can no longer see clearly, especially women who were already caregivers themselves and suddenly needed care back. Advocacy for sight loss prevention isn't a glamorous cause the way some royal charity work can be; it's practical, unglamorous, deeply tied to quality of life in a way that only really becomes obvious once you've watched someone lose it. I don't know the details of how her advocacy actually operates day to day, but choosing that particular cause, rather than something flashier, tells me somebody paid attention to what actually helps ordinary people rather than what photographs well. That's the kind of quiet, useful work I recognize and respect from my own field.
