One has to be precise about what 'influential' means in a case like Sophia of Hanover's, since the temptation with royal lineage is to credit the person for what her descendants later became. Let us be accurate: she was a German-born princess and a genuine patron of philosophy and the arts in her own right, in an era when serious intellectual patronage from a woman of her station was itself notable, and her descendants happened to become the British royal family, which is a fact of genealogy rather than of her personal accomplishment. I find myself, thirty-eight years into a career built on rigorous distinctions, slightly impatient with narratives that blur the two — the patron of ideas, and the ancestor of a dynasty — as though they were the same achievement. They are not. The former required actual engagement with the philosophy and arts of her time; the latter required only time itself. I would rather remember Sophia of Hanover for what she chose to support intellectually than for what her bloodline happened to become several centuries after she had any say in the matter.
