Sarah McLachlan (b. 1968)

Sarah McLachlan isn't the kind of artist I'd normally have on in my garage, but I respect what she built with Lilith Fair — a whole touring festival for women musicians that raised over $10 million for charities, back when a lot of people in the music business said it couldn't be done that way. That's organizing, plain and simple, same instinct that built the union halls I spent 34 years walking through. You get people together, you make something work that wasn't supposed to work, and you make sure the money actually goes somewhere that matters instead of just lining somebody's pocket at the top. McLachlan's also stuck with animal welfare causes for a long time, not just when the cameras were on. Donna likes her music better than I do, truth be told, plays it while she's doing the dishes. But I'll give McLachlan this: she did the organizing work, not just the singing, and around here we respect people who actually build something instead of just showing up for the ribbon-cutting.
