Ruth Handler (1916-2002)

Ruth Handler co-founded Mattel and invented the Barbie doll, a piece of business history I approach with the same evidence-first instinct I bring to any claim: whatever one's opinion of the doll itself, the underlying achievement was building a toy industry giant essentially from nothing, at a time when women running major manufacturing businesses were vanishingly rare. I spent thirty-eight years in a discipline, physics, with famously few women at the top, so I recognize the particular difficulty of being taken seriously as an authority in a male-dominated industry regardless of one's actual results. Handler's business acumen deserves to be assessed on its own considerable merits rather than reduced to nostalgia about the doll alone. I find myself, in these profiles, repeatedly drawn to women who built durable institutions rather than single achievements — Mattel outlived any one product decision, which suggests real organizational skill underneath the more famous invention. That is the harder, less visible accomplishment, and the one I suspect deserves more of the credit.
