I am an old-fashioned woman in most every way, but thirty-eight years teaching poor kids in a two-room schoolhouse taught me to root hard for anybody who got a rough start and made something of it anyway. This Supreme Court justice spent her whole career working so women would be treated fairly under the law, and by the time she was through, she'd changed things for generations of girls who'll never know her name but will live easier lives for her having lived. I had a student back in the eighties, a bright little girl who used to say she wanted to be a lawyer, and folks in town laughed at her some. I always wonder what became of her. Whatever a person thinks about the particulars, there's no arguing that a life spent opening doors for others is a life well spent, and that's a lesson I've tried to pass on to every child who ever sat in my classroom, girl or boy.
