Rita Hayworth in Gilda is one of those images that's basically pure composition — the hair, the gloves, the lighting, all of it engineered like a poster before it was ever a performance, and she was one of the biggest stars of the whole 1940s because of it. There's a version of visual storytelling in old Hollywood glamour that I think we've genuinely lost some of, this deliberate, painterly control over every frame a star appeared in. My mom crossed an ocean as a refugee with basically nothing, and my dad's side is all Bensonhurst Italian glamour of a much scrappier kind, so I grew up between two very different ideas of what 'presentation' even means, and Hayworth sits somewhere in the middle of that in my head — pure image, built with intention. I'd love to design something with even a tenth of that visual command someday, once I'm past changing diapers with one hand and thumbnail sketches with the other.
