Renée Zellweger won an Academy Award for playing Judy Garland in "Judy" and also built a whole other, very different, very beloved career through the Bridget Jones films, which is a wider range than people probably give her full credit for — comedic and dramatic, in two totally different registers, both done well. I've got a lot of highway hours behind me and a lot of audiobook history in my head by now, and one thing I've noticed listening to biography after biography is that the performers and public figures who last are usually the ones who refuse to get boxed into just one lane. Zellweger seems to have done exactly that on purpose rather than by accident. I try to hold two things about a career like that at once — respect for the discipline it takes to do comedy and heavy drama both well, and a plain acknowledgment that most people never even get the chance to try both. Range like that is its own kind of quiet accomplishment.
