Renata Tebaldi was celebrated for the sheer beauty of her voice across a long career at the world's leading opera houses, which is the kind of sustained excellence that takes real physical and emotional discipline to maintain year after year, decade after decade. Naku, opera reminds me a little of hospice work in an odd way — both require you to be fully present in the moment, giving everything you have to that one performance, that one patient, without holding anything back for later. I imagine a singer like Tebaldi had to protect her instrument and her health carefully for years just to keep delivering that level of beauty consistently, the same discipline I've needed on my own feet through twelve-hour shifts for decades. My own mother still watches her teleseryes every evening on the tablet, a different kind of performance entirely, but I understand now, caring for her after her stroke, how much any sustained gift like Tebaldi's costs the person carrying it. Grateful, always, for anyone who gives that much of themselves for so long.
