Renata Scotto (1934-2023)

Renata Scotto was known for her dramatic interpretations across decades at the Metropolitan Opera, which tells me this was somebody who didn't just have a good voice once and coast on it, but kept finding new depth in her performances over a career that stretched a long, long time. I've put a couple million miles on my own rig by now, and the thing I've learned about any long career, mine included, is that the people who actually last aren't the ones who peaked early, they're the ones who kept getting better at reading the room, or in her case the role, decade after decade. Opera's not exactly what plays on my radio most nights, but I respect craft wherever I find it, and "dramatic interpretations across decades" sounds like somebody who treated every performance like it still mattered, long after she'd already proven herself. That's a harder thing to sustain than getting good once. Most people don't manage it.
