I don't have much use for high fashion out here — a good pair of overalls and church clothes cover most of my needs — but there's something almost biblical, parable-like, about Ralph Lauren building one of the most recognized clothing brands in the world starting from a single tie collection. That's the mustard seed story if I ever heard a secular version of one: something small, sold with real conviction, growing into something enormous over time. I've watched a few of my own former students start with next to nothing — a little garden stand, a small sewing business — and build it patiently into something that fed their whole family, and I imagine the instincts aren't so different at any scale, just the zeros at the end of it. Building a whole recognizable brand and aesthetic out of one modest idea takes more discipline than people give fashion credit for, especially from the outside looking in the way I am. There's a lesson in there for anybody starting small: small isn't the same thing as insignificant.
