Ralph Fiennes (b. 1962)

Ralph Fiennes is one of those actors whose range genuinely startles me every time I'm reminded of it — the same man who brought such devastating weight to Schindler's List went on to play a villain children could recognize from the Harry Potter films, and somehow both performances hold up as serious work. In hospice care I've learned that holding heaviness and lightness in the same hands, sometimes in the same week, is one of the hardest skills there is, and I don't think it's so different for an actor moving between that kind of historical gravity and a fantasy franchise built for families. I don't know much about his personal life, but I respect longevity across genres more than I respect any single big performance, because it means someone kept working hard long after the obvious choice would have been to stay in one lane. My husband Tom likes his stage work more than I do; I'm the one who'll admit I mostly know him from the roles that made me cry. Either way, that's a career built on real craft, sustained a long time.
