Priscilla Chan trained as a pediatrician before co-founding the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to advance science, education, and justice, and there's something about that combination — actual hands-on medical training plus a big philanthropic platform — that reads to me like someone who knows the difference between good intentions and knowing what a system actually needs on the ground. Running a small business has taught me that the ideas that survive contact with reality are the ones built by people who've actually done the unglamorous, close-up work first, not just the ones with the biggest checkbook. A pediatrician sees exactly where a system fails real families, one appointment at a time, which is a very different education than a boardroom gives you. I think about my own bakery's two near-closures and how it was the people who actually understood the day-to-day grind of it who ended up saving it, not the ones who just admired it from outside. Chan's medical background feels like the same kind of grounding, just applied at an enormously larger scale than my little shop.
