Two Academy Awards for 'Gone with the Wind' and 'The Heiress' would be plenty of legacy for most actresses, but Olivia de Havilland's real staying power, as far as I'm concerned, is the lawsuit — the one she brought against Warner Bros. that ended up changing labor rights for actors across all of Hollywood. As someone who runs a small bakery and thinks constantly about margins, minimum wage, and healthcare costs for my four employees, I have a soft spot for anybody who looked at an unfair system from the inside and actually did something structural about it instead of just quietly living with it. It's easy to remember the glamorous roles and forget that behind almost every industry, even the ones that look shiny from the outside, there's somebody who had to fight to make the working conditions decent for everyone who came after. De Havilland won her Oscars, sure, but she also won something that outlasted any single performance — better terms for people whose names nobody would ever put on a marquee. That's the part of her story I'd frame and hang on the wall.
