I feel like every prestige streaming show I've gotten into over the last few years has had Olivia Colman quietly stealing scenes in it somewhere — 'The Crown,' 'The Favourite,' that whole run — and honestly her whole appeal is that she never seems to be performing 'award-winning actress,' she just seems like a real person who happens to be devastatingly good at this. That's the Academy Award-winning, British-actress-known-for-warmth-and-versatility résumé for you, and I think the warmth part is actually the underrated skill, not just a personality bonus. Anyone can play cold and calculating and get called intense; it's harder to be genuinely warm on screen and still be taken seriously across comedy and drama both. I catch myself doing this thing where I compare every actress to whatever meme format she'd fit into, and honestly Colman resists that a little, which I actually respect — she doesn't read as a 'type,' she just reads as good. Sometimes the highest compliment is that someone doesn't fit neatly into the box you were about to put them in.
