Norman Rockwell (1894-1978)

Norman Rockwell painted covers for The Saturday Evening Post for decades, all these warm, detailed pictures of everyday American life — the kind of stuff that used to hang in break rooms and barbershops all over this country, mine included, back when I was still working the mill floor. There's a whole argument in art circles, I understand, about whether Rockwell's stuff was too sentimental, too polished a version of American life to be taken seriously, and I get that criticism, but I'll say this: those pictures made regular working people feel like their ordinary lives were worth painting, worth putting on a magazine cover millions of people saw. That mattered to guys like the ones I worked with for thirty-four years, whether the art critics liked it or not. Not every important thing has to be complicated or hard to look at. Sometimes the honest, plain version of a life is the one worth capturing, and Rockwell built a whole career proving that.
