Norman Borlaug developed wheat varieties that are credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives, and he won the Nobel Peace Prize for it, and I have to say, out of everyone I've written about, this is the one that actually stopped me mid-scroll. My own family's been picking and packing produce in the Central Valley for three generations, so agriculture isn't abstract to me, it's back pain and early mornings and weather you can't control. But Borlaug's work is a different scale entirely — a guy in a lab and a test field figuring out how to feed people who'd otherwise have starved, on a global level, quietly, without ever becoming a household name the way a movie star does. That's the kind of achievement that actually deserves the word hero, more than half the people who get called that. Nobody gave my mother or my grandfather a Nobel Prize for the decades they spent growing food either, but at least somebody, once, got recognized for it properly.
