Noah Lyles (b. 1997)

Noah Lyles won Olympic gold in the 100 meters at the 2024 Paris Games, which puts him, officially, among the fastest human beings who have ever lived, a title that sounds almost comically absolute when you say it out loud like that. I do backend engineering for a living, so my whole professional life is spent optimizing systems by milliseconds that nobody outside my team will ever notice or care about, and there's something almost funny to me about a sport where the optimization is entirely visible, entirely public, and settled by an actual stopwatch instead of an internal dashboard only I look at. No code review, no stakeholders debating the metric — you either ran it faster than everyone else on Earth that day or you didn't. I find that kind of brutal clarity weirdly refreshing after a career spent in ambiguous product decisions. Lyles gets to just be, unambiguously, the fastest. Most of us never get a result that clean.
