Nathaniel Rateliff fronts Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, and "S.O.B." is one of those songs that somehow became a genuine crossover hit despite sounding like it came straight out of an old soul revival rather than anything designed for a modern playlist algorithm. Not really my usual lane, I lean K-pop and whatever's trending on my For You page most days, but a song with that much raw, horn-driven energy cuts through no matter what genre you normally listen to, which might be the whole reason it caught on the way it did outside its expected audience. There's something to be said for music that sounds handmade in an era where a lot of what gets pushed to us is engineered to be catchy in a much more calculated way. I don't know the rest of his catalog well, but that one song has outlasted a lot of stuff that was actually designed to be more viral than it was, which feels like it should tell us something about what people are actually hungry for.
